At Home Remedies for Adult Acne

Female Distressed Over Adult AcneYou would think that as an adult you would be past breakouts and pimples. Acne is for hormonal teenagers going through growth spurts, puberty and boy band obsessions, right? Pimples are not for the over-30 crowd; we’ve already been there, done that!

So what is happening?

Adult acne can be caused by many non-hormonal factors such as oil, stress or dead skin cells that clog pores. The good news is that there are several at home remedies you can perform to minimize or even completely erase the signs of adult acne.

Yogurt & Baking Soda

This remedy is one of our personal favorites as it seems to have the fastest results without drastically over-drying the skin. This mixture also can be used as an anti-aging serum! Combine two tablespoons of yogurt and a ½ teaspoon of baking soda to create a gentle cleanser. The baking soda will work as a gentle exfoliant that will leave your face glowing while the yogurt calms irritated skin.

Tea Tree Oil

This essential oil has so many purposes and adult acne is one where it definitely works its magic. Instead of taking antibiotics for acne, holistic practitioners recommend applying tea tree oil topically onto the acne to reduce redness and fight the bacteria. Want to make your own serum? Mix 5% tea tree oil with 95% non-comedogenic oil (argan oil works best) for a daily remedy.

Detox Diet

Certain dietary habits can contribute to acne. Foods high in refined sugars and simple carbs often cause hormonal imbalances, leaving evidence all over your skin. By increasing protein intake, eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and drinking plenty of water, your skin will have what it needs to stay revived and hydrated. Plus, you’ll feel great!

Stress Management

It is incredibly important to feel balanced, relaxed and stay the least stressed as possible. When you experience stress, your body reacts by releasing large amounts of cortisol, resulting in the opening of oil glands and filling your pores with unwanted debris. Manage stress through meditation, yoga or any activity that forces you to take deep breaths and remain in the present moment.

Herbal Steam

Not only will herbal steam lower your stress but it feels amazing! Place boiling water in your plugged bathroom sink and add a few drops of lavender, tea tree or juniper oil. Wrap your hair in a towel and let the steam soak into your softened pores. Afterward, spot treat your pimples with tea tree oil.
