LipoSonix is a body shaping liposuction alternative that uses high-intensity focused ultrasound energy to disrupt fat tissue and provide a non-invasive way to decrease fat.
The company behind LipoSonix performed a study comparing patients treated with LipoSonix to patients treated with a sham device. The treated group got a 1 cm greater decrease in waist circumference. That means, the average patient treated with LipoSonix shrunk his or her waist by a little less than 1/2 inch more than the average patient treated with the sham device.
The safety of treatment with LipoSonix was evaluated for 6 months after treatment. The adverse events included mild during and after the procedure, bruising, and swelling. There were no serious adverse events or unanticipated problems.
Conclusion About LipoSonix
It is very difficult to objectively evaluate new devices that come to market because of a lack of good studies. Much credit should be given to the manufacturers of LipoSonix for funding a controlled, blind study.
Overall, LipoSonix does appear to reduce the waistline modestly. Results from this study are similar to results from a study using Thermage. Whether or not patients maintain their results from LipoSonix, we don’t know. This study did not follow patients and monitor their results for an extended period of time. One would imagine the results would last if the patient can maintain their current weight and muscle mass. Time and real world experience will ultimately give us the answers.
