Getting the Perfect Lip with Augmentation

One of the most rewarding procedures for facial rejuvenation is lip augmentation, and getting the perfect lip can be as simple as a quick office visit.

Why Lip Augmentation?

As we age, we loose volume throughout our face including our lips. Lips become flat and thin and develop many lines. Lip lines appear in smokers and non-smokers alike.

Augmenting the lips is as simple as adding a little volume to the body and borders of the lips and filling the fine lines. My two favorite products for doing this cost-effectively are Restylane and Juvederm. Fat can also be used but it is harder to get definition with it.

Lip Augmentation Procedure

The procedure is simple, and there is no pain. The lips are numbed, and either Juvederm or Restylane is placed just under the skin of the lips. All in all, the procedure takes about 20 minutes. Your lips will be a little swollen afterwards, and this usually lasts for 2 – 3 days. The lips also bruise easily, and you should avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and vitamin E for one week prior to your procedure to minimize bruising. These agents thin the blood.

A concern of many patients is that augmenting the lips will make them look unnaturally big. This is NOT the case. People who get big lips want big lips. They get them on purpose. You will not accidentally end up with big lips.

The Perfect Lip

To get the perfect lip, we have to understand what makes an ideal lip.  Knowing what makes an ideal lip, we can fill the pillows and radiating lines, and bring the volume of the upper to lower lip into ideal proportion.

Most people that I see in practice benefit from filler placed in a variety of areas. To add volume to the lip, I fill the body of the lip. To define the lip, I place a bead of filler along the border.  Sometimes, a very small amount of filler placed in a strategic area can make a big difference.

In the end, the subtle nuances of each person’s unique lip will determine what needs to be done.
