Is Liposuction Good for Weight Loss?

Surgeon Marking Liposuction PatientThe idea itself is brilliant: Doctors insert a sort of vacuum that literally sucks the fat from your body. However, while it is still an option for those wishing to get rid of stubborn fat in target areas, it is not a solution for dramatic weight loss. The removal of fat cells does not equal weight loss; instead, liposuction provides a pleasing aesthetic appearance. While the fat cells will not return where liposuction occurred, the procedure does not stop fat from reappearing elsewhere in the body. However, there are alternative reasons why liposuction may still be helpful to your weight loss goals.

Liposuction as a “Head Start”

Some patients may argue that liposuction will give them a head start towards their ultimate weight loss goal. The removal of fat can give you a peek at what your body can look like if you keep the weight off and that can definitely be encouraging and just the motivation some need to stay committed to a new diet and exercise regimen.

Remove as Much Fat as Possible!

While liposuction does in fact remove excess fat from the body, there is definitely a limit to how much should be taken out. There is a proper percentage of fat that needs to remain in the body in order for it to be healthy and look natural. Liposuction thrives on being a technique that can be used to contour the body, not just eliminate fat and hope for the best.

So is Liposuction Good for Weight Loss?

Liposuction is an incredible technology. If you have targeted, stubborn areas that need help, liposuction is a great way to get rid of excess fat. The procedure can be a way for you to lose a small amount of weight and appear slimmer, but it is not a solution for general, overall weight loss.  And, it is certainly not a substitute for diet and exercise.

However, if you are fairly fit and healthy, liposuction might be helpful in getting rid of that last area of stubborn fat. Liposuction can help enormously in the psychological aspects of weight loss. You can see the difference after a reasonable healing time and that can act as a strong motivator for continued success.

If weight loss is your ultimate goal, liposuction alone will not get you the results you want. Much like any other weight loss regimen, a proper diet and adequate amount of exercise is the best way to achieve long-lasting and healthy weight-loss results.
